Quentin Tarantino turned an AFI Fest discussion about ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD into an unexpected preview of its follow-up on Friday, October 23.

After a screening at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre, the filmmaker introduced the first 17 minutes of THE FURTHER MIS-ADVENTURES OF CLIFF BOOTH.

The new film brings Brad Pitt back as Cliff Booth. Tarantino wrote the screenplay, but David Fincher directed the movie and was present at the event. The story moves forward from the original film’s 1969 setting to 1977. The surprise matters because the audience was given actual footage rather than another casting announcement or promotional description. It is the first substantial public glimpse of how the sequel will handle a character closely associated with Tarantino’s own filmmaking style under a different director.

The preview does not establish how the full movie will play. It does, however, move the project from anticipation to something audiences have seen.
