Netflix Renews THE DIPLOMAT for Season 5 Following Its Major Cliffhanger

Keri Russell's political drama will continue after a fourth-season finale that transformed Kate Wyler's future.

Netflix has ordered a fifth season of THE DIPLOMAT, confirming that Keri Russell’s political drama is returning after the upheaval of its fourth-season finale.

The streaming service announced the renewal Thursday, October 29, two weeks after Season 4 arrived October 15. Netflix says further production and release details will follow.

No Season 5 premiere date has been announced. Debora Cahn’s series follows Kate Wyler, whose attempts to manage international crises become inseparable from the political conflicts surrounding her own marriage and career.

The latest season also features Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford.

Netflix reported 4.8 million views in the new season’s opening week and 5.5 million in its second week. Those company figures provide context for the renewal, but the creative question may be more compelling than the numbers.

Following Kate’s dramatic stand at the G7 summit, THE DIPLOMAT now has to explore what its central character does when the position that defined her is no longer secure.

A new season promises answers, but Netflix has yet to explain how soon viewers will get them.
