High and Low
Stark, intense drama almost beyond belief!
A Yokohama shoe executive faces a wrenching choice when kidnappers mistakenly seize his chauffeur’s son but demand the ransom anyway.
Kurosawa may be better known internationally for his samurai films which were famously remade ad nauseum as Westerns and chief inspirations for Star Wars. However this contemporaneous crime thriller about an executive shoe salesman given an ultimatum by a kidnapper is up there with his greatest without a samurai sword to be seen. This film's statement on envy resonates just as well today.
Directed by Akira Kurosawa
Starring Toshirō Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Kyōko Kagawa, Tatsuya Mihashi, Isao Kimura
