Byron Allen Sells Entire STARZ Stake as Streamer Reports Quarterly Results

An SEC disclosure confirms the investor exited the position he acquired earlier this year.

Byron Allen’s investment company has sold its entire stake in STARZ, reversing an investment that earlier this year accompanied ambitious public comments about the streamer’s future ownership.

According to an SEC filing disclosed October 29, Allen Family Capital sold all 1,803,786 shares over a series of transactions between August 7 and September 29.

The transactions totaled approximately $44.9 million, compared with an initial investment of about $25 million.

Earlier this year, Allen discussed potentially acquiring control of STARZ. The sale confirms that the previously disclosed shareholding has been eliminated, but it does not establish Allen’s reasons for exiting or rule out any future bid.

The filing arrives as STARZ reports third-quarter results. Revenue reached $322.4 million, while the company recorded a $34.8 million net loss. Streaming revenue rose modestly, even as the company continues to navigate the changing economics of traditional television.

The most revealing part of the story is the contrast between the ambition of buying a streaming business and the realities of operating one.

The filing documents a completed stock sale; it does not amount to an announced takeover or a change in STARZ management.
