GODZILLA MINUS ZERO Dominates Friday Box Office as $32 Million Weekend Comes Into View

Takashi Yamazaki's sequel opens at No. 1 in North America, with strong preview sales and an opening weekend projected to nearly triple GODZILLA MINUS ONE's debut.

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO has stormed into North American theaters, taking first place at the domestic box office on Friday, November 6, and positioning itself for an opening weekend considerably larger than its predecessor.

According to The Numbers’ November 6 domestic box-office chart, the Japanese-produced sequel earned an estimated $14.5 million from 3,254 theaters, placing it comfortably ahead of the weekend’s other new releases.

The figures are preliminary, as reflected in the estimated grosses reported by Box Office Mojo’s corresponding daily chart.

And the weekend could become substantially bigger.

In its November 7 analysis, The Numbers reported that distributor GKIDS expects approximately $32 million across the opening weekend. Separately, TheWrap’s Saturday box-office report projected approximately $31 million.

Both figures are forecasts for the November 6–8 weekend, not completed three-day totals.

A Major Leap From GODZILLA MINUS ONE

The most revealing comparison is with GODZILLA MINUS ONE, the 2023 film that revitalized international interest in Toho’s iconic monster.

According to The Numbers’ historical box-office records, GODZILLA MINUS ONE opened domestically to $11,419,975 during the December 1–3, 2023 weekend. Its final domestic theatrical gross reached approximately $57.1 million.

Should GODZILLA MINUS ZERO finish near the current $31 million to $32 million forecasts, its opening would be approximately 2.7 to 2.8 times larger than that of GODZILLA MINUS ONE.

That would represent a considerable expansion in opening-weekend business for a Japanese-language GODZILLA production.

The sequel also benefits from a broader release. The Numbers lists GODZILLA MINUS ONE’s original opening in 2,308 theaters, compared with 3,254 for GODZILLA MINUS ZERO.

The numbers do not guarantee that the sequel will match its predecessor’s longevity. GODZILLA MINUS ONE continued attracting moviegoers well beyond opening weekend, and comparable staying power for the new film has yet to be established.

Nevertheless, the new film’s opening performance suggests audiences are responding to more than the novelty of another monster movie.

Early Screenings Give GODZILLA a Head Start

A substantial part of the opening-day figure came from screenings before the film’s regular Friday rollout.

In its November 7 report, The Numbers stated that $6.7 million of the $14.5 million reported for Friday came from Thursday previews and earlier IMAX screenings.

The publication broke that amount down further: approximately $3 million came from Thursday previews and $3.7 million from earlier special screenings.

Those earnings are already included in the reported Friday figure.

The strategy was announced well before opening weekend. In its October 6 theatrical release announcement, GKIDS confirmed that exclusive IMAX early-access screenings would begin November 3, followed by nationwide release November 6.

The distributor also identified GODZILLA MINUS ZERO as the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX, using certified cameras and an audiovisual presentation specifically optimized for the format.

That premium-format approach gave established fans an opportunity to see the film before its standard theatrical opening.

The result is a significant early-sales contribution, although the film’s broader weekend performance will offer a clearer indication of demand beyond those initial screenings.

GODZILLA Outpaces THE CAT IN THE HAT

Friday’s reported box-office standings also demonstrate the strength of GODZILLA MINUS ZERO relative to its competition.

According to The Numbers’ November 6 chart, Warner Bros.’ THE CAT IN THE HAT earned an estimated $6 million from 4,003 theaters, placing second for the day.

That means GODZILLA MINUS ZERO generated more than twice the reported Friday revenue while playing in 749 fewer theaters.

The distinction matters because the two films entered theaters with very different audiences and release strategies.

THE CAT IN THE HAT targets family moviegoers, whose attendance can increase over Saturday and Sunday. GODZILLA MINUS ZERO benefited from substantial advance interest and preview screenings.

Their Friday standings therefore cannot establish the final weekend rankings or how either film will perform over subsequent weeks.

Still, the opening-day comparison puts the monster sequel’s commercial strength into perspective.

A Bigger Moment for Japanese GODZILLA Movies

Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer and director for GODZILLA MINUS ZERO, continuing the story introduced in GODZILLA MINUS ONE.

According to GKIDS’ official synopsis, the sequel takes place two years after the previous film, with postwar Japan struggling to recover when another devastating threat emerges.

That continued emphasis on human experience distinguishes Yamazaki’s films from Hollywood’s separate GODZILLA and KONG franchise.

For years, Japanese-produced GODZILLA films occupied a different position in the American theatrical marketplace. Hollywood’s versions received major studio releases, while the Japanese productions generally operated on a smaller commercial scale.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE demonstrated that an original Japanese GODZILLA story could resonate with a substantial North American audience.

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO now appears positioned to build on that success.

The weekend’s projected figures remain subject to revision, but Friday’s documented performance already establishes a strong opening for the sequel.

The larger question is no longer simply whether American audiences will turn out for a Japanese GODZILLA film. It’s how large that audience can become.
