Johnny Depp Is Back? What a Possible Pirates Return Reveals About Hollywood’s Identity Crisis

Jerry Bruckheimer says Disney is talking with Johnny Depp about Pirates of the Caribbean. He also really wants Paramount to stay in Hollywood. Those two things might be more connected than they sound.

Johnny Depp might be Captain Jack Sparrow again. That’s obviously big news, but it isn’t quite the comeback story it sounds like.

Speaking at D23, longtime Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed to Deadline that conversations with Depp are happening as work continues on a sixth movie. “We’re talking with Johnny,” Bruckheimer said. “We’re working on a screenplay.”

That is about as far as the confirmed part goes. Disney hasn’t announced Depp’s return, there is no production date, and there isn’t even a finished screenplay yet. Deadline also reports, based on its own sources, that Margot Robbie would be the lead of the new movie, with Jack Sparrow appearing in a supporting role.

If that happens, it might be the smartest way to bring Pirates back, because Johnny Depp doesn’t really need a Hollywood comeback anymore.

He’s already having one.

Johnny Depp is already back

Depp’s career changed dramatically during his very public legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, particularly the 2022 defamation trial that was watched around the world. But he never stopped making movies.

He starred in Jeanne du Barry. He directed Modì. He returned to an American studio production with Lionsgate’s Day Drinker. And now Paramount has him starring as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ti West’s Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol.

So Pirates 6 wouldn’t mark the moment Hollywood decided to hire Johnny Depp again. That already happened.

This would be something bigger: Disney deciding whether to invite him back aboard the franchise that turned Jack Sparrow into one of the most recognizable movie characters of the last 25 years.

That’s a much more interesting question.

Does Pirates need another Johnny Depp movie?

There is a difference between bringing Jack Sparrow back and building another Pirates of the Caribbean movie entirely around Jack Sparrow. The first movie understood that.

Jack Sparrow wasn’t really the center of The Curse of the Black Pearl. He wandered into Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann’s story and stole almost every scene he was in. That was part of the fun.

As the series continued, Sparrow became more and more central until the strange pirate who kept disrupting the movie essentially became the movie. Maybe the answer isn’t choosing between Johnny Depp and no Johnny Depp. Maybe Jack Sparrow works better when he doesn’t have to carry the whole ship.

If Deadline’s reporting about Margot Robbie leading the movie proves accurate, Disney could have a pretty useful middle ground.

Bring Sparrow back. Let Depp do the thing only Depp can do with that character. Then let somebody new drive the story forward.

We don’t know if that’s actually the movie Disney will make, but it sounds considerably more interesting than simply trying to recreate 2003.

Then Bruckheimer started talking about Paramount

This is where the conversation gets weird.

In the same D23 interview, Bruckheimer was asked about another piece of Hollywood drama: Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and the legal fight surrounding it.

According to Variety and TheWrap, Paramount CEO David Ellison has told senior executives he is prepared to begin moving the company out of California as soon as October 1 if settlement talks over the Warner Bros. Discovery antitrust case do not move forward.

Bruckheimer’s position was considerably simpler. He wants Paramount to stay.

That makes sense. This is the guy who made Top Gun, and Bruckheimer has spent decades making exactly the kind of giant Hollywood movies that studios keep saying audiences still want: Beverly Hills Cop, The Rock, Armageddon, Pirates of the Caribbean, Top Gun: Maverick.

Now one of the studios most closely tied to that history is openly considering whether its future needs to remain in California.

As of now, it seems nothing has been decided. Paramount has not been reported to have announced that it is leaving. But the threat isn’t happening in a vacuum.

Los Angeles production has been struggling. Movies and television shows have increasingly gone elsewhere for cheaper production and stronger incentives. Meanwhile, studios are merging, streaming companies are becoming movie studios, and some of the biggest companies in entertainment barely resemble the Hollywood studios they started as.

Hollywood is still Hollywood, but its position as the physical center of the movie business isn’t as secure as it once seemed.

Everybody wants the old magic

That’s what makes Bruckheimer’s two comments fit together.

Disney is trying to figure out what Pirates of the Caribbean looks like now. Johnny Depp may return as Jack Sparrow. Paramount has another Top Gun movie in development. Studios continue reaching backward toward characters and franchises audiences already know.

At the same time, the business that created those franchises keeps changing. Studios consolidate. Productions move. Streaming reshapes what gets made. And Paramount might someday decide that being Paramount Pictures doesn’t necessarily require staying in Hollywood.

That’s strange, but it’s also a pretty good snapshot of the movie business right now.

Everyone wants the magic of old Hollywood: the recognizable stars, the giant franchises, the movies that feel like events. But nobody seems completely sure what the machinery behind those movies is supposed to look like anymore.

So yes, Johnny Depp returning to Pirates of the Caribbean would be a big deal. But maybe the more interesting story is everything happening around him.

Jerry Bruckheimer wants Jack Sparrow back. He wants Paramount making movies. And he’d like Hollywood to remain in Hollywood.

Twenty years ago, none of those things would have sounded particularly complicated.

Today, none of them are guaranteed.
