Lionsgate Revenue Jumps 41% as Television Production Rebounds

Strong television production and continued success from MICHAEL helped lift the studio's quarterly revenue to nearly $669 million, although Lionsgate still finished with a net loss.

Lionsgate Studios reported a substantial improvement in its financial performance on Thursday, November 5, with quarterly revenue climbing 41% as television production accelerated and its motion picture business continued to generate strong returns.

According to financial results filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Lionsgate generated $668.8 million in revenue for the three months ending September 30, 2026, compared with $475.1 million during the same period last year.

The company also reported $29.1 million in operating income, reversing an operating loss of $46 million in the comparable quarter of 2025.

Television Production Drives the Recovery

Lionsgate’s television production division delivered one of the quarter’s most significant improvements, with revenue increasing 56% to $309.5 million, up from $198.7 million a year earlier. Segment profit rose 73% to $21.6 million.

The studio attributed much of that growth to increased deliveries of scripted television episodes, including POWER: ORIGINS and second seasons of THE STUDIO and THE HUNTING WIVES.

Those deliveries are particularly important for Lionsgate’s longer-term business. The company expects to double its scripted episode deliveries during fiscal 2027 compared with fiscal 2026, suggesting a substantially busier production schedule as it supplies programming to television networks and streaming platforms.

That expectation remains a company forecast, however, rather than a completed production milestone.

MICHAEL and the Film Library Continue to Deliver

Lionsgate’s motion picture division also posted stronger results, generating $359.3 million in revenue, a 30% increase over the previous year. The division reported $88.7 million in segment profit.

The studio credited continued contributions from MICHAEL alongside the performance of its extensive film and television library.

That library remains a significant part of Lionsgate’s business. Revenue generated by its existing catalogue reached $1.04 billion over the preceding 12 months, the second-highest trailing annual total in the company’s history.

Lionsgate also reported a filmed entertainment backlog valued at $1.5 billion. That figure represents contracted future revenue that has not yet been recognized, offering some visibility into the studio’s upcoming business without guaranteeing the financial success of individual productions.

A Stronger Quarter Does Not Mean the Losses Are Gone

Despite the improvement in operating income, Lionsgate reported a $15.5 million net loss from continuing operations attributable to shareholders, equivalent to a loss of five cents per diluted share.

That represents a considerable improvement over the $111.9 million loss from continuing operations attributable to shareholders recorded in the comparable quarter last year, but it also illustrates the difference between operational improvement and overall profitability.

Cash flow showed a similar pattern. Lionsgate used $52.7 million in operating cash from continuing operations during the quarter, compared with $104.1 million a year earlier. The company reduced its cash outflow substantially, although its quarterly operating cash flow remained negative.

What This Means for Movies and Television

For entertainment audiences, the most relevant development may be the rebound in television production. Lionsgate is delivering more scripted programming while continuing to generate revenue from established films and series.

The combination gives the studio multiple sources of revenue beyond the theatrical performance of any single release. A successful movie can continue producing returns through later distribution, while television production supplies additional business from networks and streaming services.

The latest results suggest that strategy is producing financial improvements, particularly in television. Whether Lionsgate can turn that progress into sustained net profitability remains an open question.

For now, the company is reporting stronger revenue, improved operating performance and a growing pipeline of television production, even as its bottom line shows there is more work to do.
