Netflix Orders STRANGER THINGS Prequel OTHER WORLDS for 2028

A new live-action series will take the franchise into the 1950s, with writer Kate Trefry and the Duffer brothers developing a separate story.

STRANGER THINGS is finished, but Netflix is returning to its supernatural world from an earlier point in history.

On November 6, Netflix announced a live-action prequel titled OTHER WORLDS: A STRANGER THINGS ADVENTURE. The series is set in the 1950s, before both the original show and the events depicted in the stage production STRANGER THINGS: THE FIRST SHADOW. Netflix is targeting a 2028 debut, without announcing an exact date.

Kate Trefry, a STRANGER THINGS writer who also worked on THE FIRST SHADOW, will serve as co-creator, writer and showrunner alongside creators Matt and Ross Duffer. Director Joe Wright is attached to direct the first three episodes. Production is planned for New Mexico.

The announcement indicates a new cast of characters and a different setting rather than a straightforward continuation of the Hawkins teenagers’ story. Casting and additional plot details remain unannounced.

It’s a sizable extension of the franchise, but viewers will have to wait to learn how directly the prequel connects to familiar mythology.
