Russell Brand Convicted of Rape and Three Sexual Assaults in London

A London jury found the comedian guilty of four offenses involving four women. He was acquitted on three other counts and awaits sentencing November 9.

Russell Brand has been convicted of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.

The jury returned its verdicts Thursday, November 5, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The convictions involve four women and offenses committed between 2004 and 2009, the Metropolitan Police confirmed.

Brand pleaded not guilty and denied committing nonconsensual sexual acts. The jury also acquitted him of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. Those acquitted charges concerned other allegations considered during the trial.

Following the verdicts, Judge Joel Bennathan rejected Brand’s application for bail and ordered him held in custody. Sentencing is scheduled for Monday, November 9. No prison sentence has yet been imposed, although the judge indicated that a substantial custodial term should be expected, according to the Associated Press.

The police investigation began after allegations were reported in September 2023 by Channel 4’s DISPATCHES, The Times and The Sunday Times.

Brand rose to prominence through stand-up comedy and television before appearing in Hollywood films including FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL and GET HIM TO THE GREEK. He subsequently developed a substantial online following.
