SAG-AFTRA Ratifies New Animation Contracts With Stronger AI Protections

Voice performers approve new agreements covering television and basic cable animation through June 2030.

SAG-AFTRA members have ratified new television and basic cable animation contracts, establishing updated compensation and artificial-intelligence rules for performers whose voices help bring animated characters to life.

TheWrap reported the October 29 ratification following the membership vote, with 94.5 percent of votes cast in favor.

The agreements run from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030. According to the union’s published contract information, the agreements include annual increases of 3 percent to minimum compensation, plus improvements to certain streaming residuals and health and retirement contributions. They also extend protections around AI-generated performances and digital replicas.

Those protections matter because voice performers are particularly exposed to technologies that can imitate existing performances, automate dubbing and potentially create new dialogue without an actor standing in a recording booth.

The vote does not prohibit every use of artificial intelligence in animation, nor does it settle every future labor dispute. It establishes negotiated contractual boundaries and compensation provisions that performers and signatory studios are expected to follow.

At a time when animated series can circulate worldwide on streaming platforms, the agreements are a reminder that the voices behind the characters remain an essential part of the business.
