THE ODYSSEY Drove Roughly Three-Quarters of IMAX’s Record Quarterly Box Office

IMAX reported $712 million in quarterly global box office, with Christopher Nolan's film accounting for roughly $538 million.

IMAX just delivered the strongest financial quarter in its history, and Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY deserves much of the credit.

According to the company’s official third-quarter earnings release, published November 5, IMAX generated a record $712 million in worldwide box-office receipts during the three months ending September 30, 2026. Company revenue reached approximately $175 million, an increase of 64% over the same period last year.

Those are extraordinary numbers. But the most interesting part is how much of that success came from a single movie.

One Movie, Three-Quarters of the Box Office

IMAX’s own financial breakdown identifies THE ODYSSEY as the company’s highest-grossing release of all time.

The film generated approximately $538 million in IMAX box-office receipts during the third quarter, accounting for nearly 76% of the company’s $712 million quarterly total.

That is not an estimate based on industry projections. The figures come directly from IMAX’s November 5 financial disclosure.

The company also reported that THE ODYSSEY has generated more than $550 million in worldwide IMAX receipts over its entire theatrical run. That lifetime figure includes business outside the third-quarter reporting period, which is why it differs from the $538 million attributed to the quarter itself.

In other words, Christopher Nolan didn’t merely give IMAX another hit. His film accounted for roughly three out of every four dollars collected at IMAX box offices during the quarter.

The Financial Results Were Just as Impressive

IMAX reported approximately $117 million in third-quarter net income, compared with $22.6 million one year earlier.

Reported diluted earnings per share reached $1.96, while adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $2.21. The latter is a non-GAAP financial measure, and both figures are identified separately in the company’s official earnings tables.

The success is also influencing the company’s expansion plans.

IMAX reported more than 100 new theater-system agreements signed during the first nine months of 2026, with approximately 65% involving new locations.

And executives believe another major release could help sustain that momentum.

In its November 5 earnings announcement, IMAX specifically cited strong advance ticket sales for DUNE: PART THREE, scheduled for December, as evidence of continuing demand for premium theatrical experiences.

That is the company’s own assessment of advance sales, not a prediction of the film’s eventual box-office performance.

Hollywood’s Theatrical Recovery Has a Complication

Recent financial reports from AMC, Cinemark and Sony Pictures have offered encouraging signs for theatrical exhibition. Audiences are still willing to leave their living rooms, buy tickets and pay extra for an experience they cannot reproduce at home.

But IMAX’s latest results reveal something important about that enthusiasm.

THE ODYSSEY wasn’t simply part of a successful quarter. It overwhelmingly dominated it.

That’s both encouraging and potentially concerning.

On one hand, Nolan has demonstrated that premium theatrical presentation can remain an enormous commercial attraction. His commitment to filming THE ODYSSEY entirely with IMAX film cameras helped make the format part of the movie’s appeal.

On the other hand, a business that depends so heavily on exceptional blockbusters must keep finding exceptional blockbusters.

DUNE: PART THREE and other major upcoming releases may help answer whether this level of demand can be sustained.

For now, IMAX has every reason to celebrate its historic performance. But the larger question for Hollywood isn’t whether audiences will pay to see the right movie on the biggest possible screen.

It’s how often Hollywood can give them a movie they consider worth that experience.
